Although home to one of the oldest civilisations on Earth, the fate of India has for millennia been to be dominated by a succession of outside powers, in particular by the Persians, Moghuls and finally the British Empire. But growing nationalism during the early decades of the 20th century contributed to a strong independence movement led by Mahatmas Gandhi, which eventually secured the establishment of India as a sovereign state in 1947.
India is governed at the federal level by a technocratic one-party administration led by the Unity Party.
